Slate Space began quite simply, with a curiosity about how materials take shape as objects.

At the beginning

Much of the early work in the studio centred around experimenting with Jesmonite, testing moulds, playing with forms, and learning how subtle changes in process can shape the character of an object.

These early pieces weren’t about launching a finished product line, but about understanding how materials behave and how objects slowly find their place in everyday spaces.

Material exploration

Spending time making also started to raise bigger questions.

The more we worked with materials and small objects in the studio, the more we found ourselves thinking about the wider world of craft: the people behind the objects we live with, the knowledge carried through traditional techniques, and the communities that sustain them.

Looking outward

Across Southeast Asia, many independent makers and small studios continue to shape objects with care and intention. Much of this work exists quietly, often within workshops that remain largely unseen beyond their local context.

Slate Space is gradually expanding its focus toward discovering and connecting with these makers.

The intention isn’t simply to curate objects, but to better understand the materials, processes, and stories behind them. Every maker carries a relationship with their craft, whether through ceramics, wood, textiles, stone, or other material practices. Those relationships shape the objects that eventually enter our homes.

Future collaborations

Over time, Slate Space hopes to build thoughtful collaborations with independent makers across the region. The goal is to create a space where objects are appreciated not only for their form, but also for the craft, context, and people behind them.

For now, the studio continues to be guided by curiosity—about materials, makers, and the quiet objects that shape the very spaces we live in.
